Dating: 104 Let’s talk about sex

 

   How do you feel about the word "Sex.... " Are you feeling skirmish yet? It is OK if you are. Many adults and young adults start getting uncomfortable talking about the topic of SEX. Many people do not want to talk to others about sex, not even to a doctor.  However, it is important that we talk about sex with in our families. Now, I know what you are thinking. I am not going to talk with my children or parents about sex.

    Being a parent of a young man talking about sex can be uncomfortable for him and I. I grew up in a home that we did not talk about sex at all. To this day my mom spells sex backwards and turns all red. I had the opportunity when I was in High School to go into middle school classrooms to talk about abstinence. The program was called STARS, I am not sure the program is still using that name. This was an amazing program because it was not sex education but help the presenter and the students understand the importance of waiting to have sex.

 

    In Successful Marriages and Families chapter 5 by James M. Harper and Leslie Feinaure talks about a mother and daughter having a conversation about if "sex is better than candy." The mother must have been ready for the conversation because without missing a beat she stated "Oh yes, dear, with your husband in an eternal marriage, sex is far better than candy." This simple but important conversation helped put in the daughters mind that sex is something very amazing as long as it was done with your husband. 

 

 

    It is important that being intimate with someone is more than just having sex with them. It is building a connection with that person. A connection that should only be done with someone if you are married to them. In today's world it is becoming very common for people to for go marriage and just live with a person and have a family.

    Jason Carroll stated in his article "Delaying Marriage: The Trends and Consequences" people are waiting longer to get married and have families, if they get married. It is important to not put off marriage when you are young. Yes, some people do not get married until they are older, which is fine. However, it is important to remember we have been put on this earth to have families. Many young people in the world for going marriage and just living with a partner. However, having a partner and not a spouse is not the same. Marriage is a lot of hard work. When you are not married it is easy to say that you going to leave the relationship.  Which is not good for the family unit. Studies have shown that people who "test driving" their relationship do not have a very high successful rate. 

 

    As a couple it is important to make sure you talk about sex as well. It seems that is a topic that people within my church unit do not want to talk about a lot. Which I understand, since it is a private moment between two people. However, sometimes it is important to talk about things so that people are not frighten about them. I have been reading "Sexual Wholeness in Marriage." While reading the book it has been interesting to read about the topic of sex and that it is OK as a member of the church to talk about it.  I would highly suggest putting this book on your reading list. No matter what stage of life that you are currently in.
